ORANGEBURG, SC -- Diane Staats of Maggie Valley, N.C. birdied the 17th hole

Friday for a one-shot win, with partner Brenda Kuehn of Fletcher, N.C., in

the 19th Carolinas Women's Four-Ball championship at the Country Club of

Orangeburg.

Staats and Kuehn had a three-birdie, no-bogey round of 69 for a 136

total, eight under par. They finished one ahead of two-time champions Terrie

Foote of Cornelius, N.C. and Patty Moore of Charlotte, N.C.

Staats and Kuehn started the round two shots behind Lori Teague of

Hickory, N.C. and Melissa Sage of Charlotte, N.C., who finished third with

73--138.

"It was very close to the finish," Staats said. As she sank the

critical birdie putt on the 17th hole, both Teague and Sage bogeyed the hole

to drop out of a tie that had existed most of the back nine.

Foote birdied the 16th hole to move her team into second place.

Kuehn was runner-up in the 1995 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur championship

and then was named to the United States Curtis Cup team this year that played

against a similar team from Great Britain and Ireland. But in Orangeburg,

Staats proved the leader, making six of the team's 10 birdies over two days.

"This was certainly Diane's tournament," Kuehn said. "She was

outstanding."

The championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
